Space breeding refers to the technique of sending seeds or microorganisms
into space on a recoverable satellite or spacecraft. In the strong-radiation,
high-vacuum, low-gravity and alternating magnetic field in space environment,
seeds or microorganisms may undergo beneficial mutation. Upon returning to
Earth, mutated seeds and microorganisms will be selected to breed strains with
higher quality and yield.
Although space mutation breeding seems different from mutation on
the Earth, it is still within the category of traditional physical and chemical
mutation because it is unlike transgenic engineering that introduces extragenic
genes to upgrade species.
